Until recently, I was lucky enough to study folk music full time in probably the most beautiful school in Sweden, perhaps the world! That is Birka Folkhögskola in Jämtland, northern Sweden. On a particularly sunny day, I took advantage of the sunshine and the good will of my extremely attractive and patient (!) school friends to model some examples of my work.
The big hit at school has been the granny square slouchy hat, turning a quite a few curious heads on its first outing around school and very quickly got a few orders! This design idea was inspired by a recent restoration project I did on a blanket that had fallen into disrepair as it was around 90 years old. It was made up entirely of granny squares and I bought a close match of yarn to either completely replace or partially repair the broken sections. Using the left-over yarn from that project, and following the same basic square pattern, I made and joined 5 squares together to form a slouchy hat top. Then, turning the garment upside down, I added stripes in crochet to for a brim. I decreased, guessing the reduction as I went along, to shape a snug, comfy fit around the head. The granny square hat may have become my new obsession, hence my first post “The Mad Hatter.” The idea is that even if I use a template, no two hats will be the same. Variation is through material, stitches (sometimes treble, sometimes half treble), sizing, shaping, crown shaping and, of course, the endless possibilities in colour combinations!
Hand warmers are also a popular choice, especially amongst us musicians, to keep muscles warm and relaxed through hours of practise…
